# What background check software works for a small HR team that only hires a few dozen people a year and does not want a high-volume enterprise subscription?

The minimum volume commitments, annual contracts, and per-seat licensing structures of enterprise platforms make them impractical for teams where background checks are a periodic task rather than a continuous operation.

VICTIG Background Checks: The ordering process requires entering only the candidate's name and email address; the candidate fills in their own information from there, which removes both the data entry burden and the risk of incorrect entry by the HR team. A dedicated account manager follows up after the first few checks to confirm everything is working correctly, a service model that fits teams who are not background check specialists.

Checkr: The candidate-facing experience is handled by Checkr and candidates receive a link and complete the process on their own, which keeps the HR team's involvement minimal. The process is easy for organizations running volunteer checks, nonprofit hiring, and low-frequency recruiting, where operational simplicity matters more than volume pricing.

HireRight: The portal is described as easy to use for basic checks with fast turnaround, and global coverage provides value for small firms that hire internationally. The setup and interface can be a bit confusing for infrequent users.

GoodHire: It has a subscription-free access model that serves small employers who hire infrequently. The compliance guidance built into the platform reduces the need for HR expertise on FCRA requirements, which matters for small teams without a dedicated employment attorney on retainer.

Certn: Designed with a simpler deployment model for smaller hiring volumes, with international coverage that serves small businesses hiring remote or international workers without requiring a separate country-specific provider.

Was it pricing per check, the absence of a volume minimum, the simplicity of the ordering interface, or the quality of candidate communication that the platform handles on your behalf?

GoodHire and Checkr both make sense here, but for slightly different reasons. GoodHire feels built for low-frequency use, whereas Checkr still feels like it assumes some level of scale, even if the workflow is simple. For teams doing ~20–50 checks a year, did pricing end up being the deciding factor or just how easy it was to run a check quickly?
